288 - The Last Supper Through The Resurrection of Jesus Christ

Session One - The Introduction

My name is Steve Jaynes and I read Bible stories while pointing out keys and principles on how to accurately understand the Bible when we read. We are starting a Bible reading that is a big one. We are going to read every record in chronological order from all four Gospels of every event from The Last Supper through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

This will be a big project. There are more scriptures about this particular period of time than any other time in the Bible. It's going to take time to go through each of these events starting at the Last Supper all the way through to the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

It's going to take several sessions to get through the entire reading. But I think it's one worthy of pursuing.

To help you along we've made a syllabus making it easier for you to follow along with the readings if you'd like. I have put in the syllabus all the scriptures in chronological order so that you can follow along easily if you wanted to. I will be reading from one gospel to another one in each event one at a time. The Syllabus will be in the Show Notes with the Podcast.

The Syllabus - The Introduction

I teach people how to read the Bible while pointing out keys and principles on how to accurately understand the Bible when you read it.

One key is to understand "To Whom It Is Written." The Bible is written to three groups of people: the Jews [Judeans or Israelites], the Gentiles, and the Church of God. We need to recognize to whom the Word is written as we read various passages in the Bible to be able to understand how to apply it in our lives.

1Corinthians 10:32 "Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:""Before the Day of Pentecost, the majority of the writings in the Bible were addressed to the Jews [Judeans or Israelites]. After the Day of Pentecost, the greater part was to the Church of God, especially the books of Romans through Thessalonians, often referred to as the “Church Epistles”.

Romans 15:4 "For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope."

The Gospels, teach us of Jesus Christ’s earthly life and ministry before the Day of Pentecost. On that Pentecost, it was first available for people to get born again and become part of the Church of God. Since the Day of Pentecost it has been available for people from both groups, the Judeans, and the Gentiles, to believe God's Word and receive and get born again.

Something that we need to keep in mind and make a note of is that Christian historians say the Church Epistles were all written between 51 and 62 AD. Ephesians through Colossians were all written by Paul from prison in about 62 AD. They were the last ones written.

Christian historians have also said that the Gospels were written between 70 AD and 100 AD. after the Church Epistles were all written. Why?

Christian historians have also said that 1 & 2 Timothy were written between 64 & 65 AD. Look what Paul wrote to Timothy in 2 Timothy.

2 Timothy 4:6-11 "For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. 7I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: 8Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. 9Do thy diligence to come shortly unto me: 10For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia. 11Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with thee: for he is profitable to me for the ministry. 12And Tychicus have I sent to Ephesus. 13The cloke that I left at Troas with Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee, and the books, but especially the parchments."

The burning of Rome began on July 18, 64 AD, probably started by Nero; but he definitely blamed the Christians. Great persecution came upon the Christian Church in Rome after the burning of Rome. About the same time, Paul wrote to Timothy.

The Romans burned all the Christian writings, so very little is known of what happens after this date. The history of the Christian Church is silent until about 130 AD. While the persecution was going on in Rome the believers in Rome had to go underground. They literally lived underground in the sewers, in dens, in caves, and in the deserts. But at the same time, they were copying down the Scriptures.

In the book of 2 Corinthians, it says that we no longer know Jesus Christ in the flesh.

2Corinthians 5:15,16 "And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again. 16Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more."

Why? Because now he lives within us, Christ within us. Now he's at the right hand of God, second in command. Now we have a more powerful life and a better relationship with Jesus Christ. We now can do the works that Jesus Christ did and greater. So much more is available to us today than in the gospel period.

Even we have different lives from one period of time to another.

This is the most momentous time in all of history because of all that Jesus Christ accomplished for us. It's worth the time to look at it in great detail so that we can begin to appreciate all that Jesus Christ did and accomplished for us.

In the Church Epistles, it tells us much more of what we have because of the accomplished works of Jesus Christ, but it doesn't go into a lot of detail about how He did so. In Romans, it tells us much about what we have but it uses just one word to tell us what Jesus did to obtain it.

Romans 3:25 "Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation [payment in full] through faith [believing] in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

The word used is 'blood.' It's not just that he pricked his finger, but it's a figure referring to all that he went through from "The Last Supper through the resurrection."

Philippians 2:5-11 "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery [something to be forcibly attained] to be equal with God: 7But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. 9Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."

In studying the events from The Last Supper through The Resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, we will learn details of all that Jesus Christ did. We will gain a greater appreciation of who Jesus Christ is and all that He went through.

There are other keys to understanding.

2Timothy 3:16 "All scripture is given by inspiration of God [theopneustos, God-breathed], and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:"

All scripture is profitable. Some scriptures are written directly to us and are applied to us directly. Some are for our learning. In learning what Jesus Christ accomplished for us we can gain a greater appreciation.

2Peter 1:20,21 "Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 21For the prophecy [the context is “prophecy of the scripture”] came not in old [at any] time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost."

The Scriptures tell us the truth and we will read them in chronological order, letting the Scriptures interpret themselves.

John 14:26 "But the Comforter [referring to the holy spirit], which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he [the spirit] shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you."

Jesus was telling this to His disciples, some of whom wrote the Gospels.

John 15:26,27 "But when the Comforter [the spirit] is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he [the spirit] shall testify of me: 27And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning."

From the beginning? In the book of Acts, when they needed to replace Judas they were looking for someone who had been with Jesus from the beginning, to be an eyewitness of all that Jesus Christ did. It looks like being there at the beginning of His ministry and having the holy spirit would make them effective witnesses.

Luke 1:1-4 "Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration [narration] of those things which are most surely believed among us, 2Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word; 3It seemed good to me [Luke] also, having had perfect [accurate] understanding of all things from the very first [Gr. anothen, from above], to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus, 4That thou mightest know the certainty of those things [things relating to Jesus Christ‘s earthly life and ministry], wherein thou hast been instructed."

One can see that Luke wrote as God moved him. This is true of all the Gospels, as in all the Scriptures.

The main emphasis of each of the Gospels;

Matthew: showing Jesus as the King and His Kingly lineage back to King David through to Abraham. Written about 85 AD.

Mark: as the Servant with no lineage at all, servants have no lineage. Written about 70 AD. The first one was written.

Luke: showing Jesus as the Man, showing Him as the son of man and his lineage back to Adam, the first man. Written about 85 AD, Luke also wrote The Book of Acts after He wrote Luke, sometime before 90 AD.

John: Showing Jesus as The Son of God, starting out as ‘the lamb of God.’

John wrote the Gospel of John about 90 AD. The rest of his writings between 95 and 110 AD.

When it comes to letting the Scriptures interpret themselves there can be no contradictions.

We must pay attention to the subject, time, place, persons, etc.

In cases of multiple accounts, are the events identical, or are they similar?

Why look at all four Gospels? – To get the complete picture.

There is often scripture build-up. One verse can add information to the information in another account. However, no scripture will ever contradict another.

God is perfect. His son Jesus Christ is perfect.

Knowing that God is perfect, His Word must be perfect also.

God cannot contradict himself.

As we go through the events in the Gospels in chronological order we're going to let the Word speak for itself. We are going to learn what happened in this most momentous time in all history. It was the greatest time in history because of what it brought about:

The redemption of mankind, making it available for us to have forgiveness of sins and eternal life.
