293 - The Last Supper Through The Resurrection of Jesus Christ

Session Six - The Morning Trails

My name is Steve Jaynes and I read Bible stories while pointing out keys and principles on how to accurately understand the Bible when we read. I started a Bible reading that is a big one. We are going to read every record in chronological order from all four Gospels of every event from The Last Supper through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

This will be a big project. There are more scriptures about this particular period of time than any other time in the Bible. It's going to take time to go through each of these events starting at the Last Supper all the way through to the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

It's going to take several sessions to get through the entire reading. But I think it's one worthy of pursuing.

To help you along we've made a syllabus making it easier for you to follow along with the readings if you'd like. I have put in the syllabus all the scriptures in chronological order so that you can follow along easily if you wanted to. I will be reading from one gospel to another one in each event one at a time. The Syllabus will be in the Show Notes with the Podcast.

Session Six: The Morning Trials

When it comes to reading the Bible I like to read about principles, promises, and exhortation.

Matthew 27:1 “When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death:”

After the illegal, and sham of a midnight trial, they bring Jesus in front of all the chief priests and the elders and do an even worse trial. I don't even know if you could even call it a trial. They just wanted to put him to death.

Mark 15:1 “And straightway in the morning the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council…”

Luke 22:66-71 “And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying, 67Art thou the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe: 68And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go. 69Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God. 70Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am. 71And they said, What need we any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth.”

Quite a trial. They didn't even bring witnesses this time. They just said it and that was enough.

Luke 23:1 “And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate.”

John 18:28a “Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early…”

John 18:28b “…and they [the Judean religious leaders] themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.”

John 18:29 “Pilate then went out unto them [the chief priests and elders],and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?”

John 18:30 “They answered and said unto him [Pilate], If he [Jesus] were not a malefactor [evildoer], we would not have delivered him up unto thee.”

Did they answer Pilate's question? No. They just said hey we wouldn't have brought him here if he wasn't a bad guy. Oh, you want accusation. Well, let me give you one.

Luke 23:2 “And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King.”

None of these accusations ever came up before. They just made it up on the spot. Trying to give Pilate a reason to do what they wanted. To have Jesus put to death. Saying that Jesus was a treasonous man which isn't true. Jesus even said “Give to Caesar what is his and give to God what is God's.

John 18:31,32 “Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful [according to the governing Roman laws] for us to put any man to death: 32That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what [manner of, method] death he should die.”

John 18:33-38 “Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews? 34Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me? 35Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done? 36Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. 37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. [Jesus knew He was and what He had to do.] To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. 38Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.”

Luke 23:3,4 “And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it. 4Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man.”

Pilate question Him and couldn't find anything that he did.

Luke 23:5-7 “And they [the chief priests] were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place. 6When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilaean. 7And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time.”

When Pilate saw that Herod was in town he thought this might be a loophole for him to get out of the situation which he did not want to be in.

Luke 23:8-12 “And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him. 9Then he [Herod] questioned with him [Jesus] in many words; but he [Jesus] answered him nothing.

[Jesus had no respect for Herod.]

10And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him. 11And Herod with his men of war set him at nought [treated him with contempt], and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate. 12And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together: for before they were at enmity between themselves.”

Matthew 27:3,4 “Then Judas, which had betrayed him [Jesus], when he [Judas] saw that he [Jesus] was condemned, repented himself [“himself“ is not in the text], and brought again [returned] the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, 4Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the [omit “the”] innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that.”

Matthew 27:5 “And he [Judas] cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.”

Matthew 27:6-10 “And the chief priests took the silver pieces [which Judas had cast down in the Temple], and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood. 7And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in. 8Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day. 9Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value; 10And gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me.”

Matthew 27:11-14 “And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest. 12And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing. 13Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee? 14And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.”

Mark 15:2-5 “And Pilate asked him, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answering said unto him, Thou sayest it. 3And the chief priests accused him of many things: but he answered nothing. 4And Pilate asked him again, saying, Answerest thou nothing? behold how many things they witness against thee. 5But Jesus yet answered nothing; so that Pilate marvelled.”

Luke 23:13 “And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,”

Mark 15:6,7 “Now at that feast he [Pilate] released unto them one prisoner, whomsoever they desired. 7And there was one named Barabbas, which lay bound with them that had made insurrection with him, who had committed murder in the insurrection.”

Mark 15:8 “And the multitude crying aloud began to desire him to do as he had ever done unto them.”

Matthew 27:16-18 “And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas. 17Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ? 18For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.”

Pilate understood the motivation of the men who had brought Jesus to him. He wasn’t being fooled.

Matthew 27:19 “When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.”

Matthew 27:20,21 “But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus. 21The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas.”

Mark 15:9-11 “But Pilate answered them, saying, Will ye that I release unto you the King of the Jews? 10For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him for envy. 11But the chief priests moved the people, that he should rather release Barabbas unto them.”

John 18:39,40 “But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews? 40Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.”

Luke 23:14-17 “[Pilate] Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people: and, behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him: 15No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him. 16I will therefore chastise him, and release him. 17(For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.)”

Luke 23:18,19 “And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas: 19(Who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.)”

John 19:1-3 “Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged [to scourge with a lash or rod, to whip, or to flog.] him. 2And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe, 3And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands [to beat with the palms or with rods].”

John 19:4,5 “Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him. 5Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!”

Meaning look at the man that does not look like a man. Because he was so beaten.

Luke 23:20 “Pilate therefore, willing [desiring] to release Jesus, spake again to them.”

Matthew 27:22 “Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ?…”

Mark 15:12 “And Pilate answered and said again unto them, What will ye then that I shall do unto him whom ye call the King of the Jews?”

John 19:6 “When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him…”

Luke 23:21 “But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him.”

Mark 15:13 “And they cried out again, Crucify him.”

Matthew 27:22 “…They all say unto him [Pilate], Let him be crucified.”

John 19:6,7 “…Pilate saith unto them [the religious leaders], Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him. 7The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.”

John 19:8-11 “When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid; 9And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer. 10Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee? 11Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.”

John 19:12-15 “And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar's friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar. 13When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha. 14And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour [noon]: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King! 15But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.”

Matthew 27:23 “And the governor [Pilate] said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.”

Mark 15:14 “Then Pilate said unto them, Why, what evil hath he done? And they cried out the more exceedingly, Crucify him.”

Luke 23:22 “And he said unto them the third time, Why, what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore chastise him, and let him go. 23And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed.”

Matthew 27:24 “When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.”

Matthew 27:25 “Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.”

Luke 23:24,25 “And Pilate gave sentence [or assented] that it should be as they required. 25And he released unto them him [Barabbas] that for sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they had desired; but he delivered Jesus to their will.”

Mark 15:15 “And so Pilate, willing [deciding] to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged [to whip] him, to be crucified.”

Matthew 27:26 “Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged [to whip] Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.”

John 19:16 “Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.”

Matthew 27:27-31 “Then the soldiers of the governor [Pilate] took Jesus into the common hall [of the governor‘s palace], and gathered unto him the whole band [cohort] of soldiers. 28And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet [crimson or deep scarlet] robe [a wide, coarse military cloak]. 29And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews! 30And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote [to beat repeatedly with a stick] him on the head. 31And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.”

Mark 15:16-20 “And the soldiers led him away into the hall, called Praetorium; and they call together the whole band. 17And they clothed him with purple [a purple garment], and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head, 18And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews! 19And they smote [to beat repeatedly with a stick] him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him. 20And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes [outer garments] on him, and led him out to crucify him.”

Three or more times they placed a crown of thorns on His head. Plus three or more times they clothed Him. Then they tore it off.

God’s Word does not give details in terms of time from Tuesday afternoon until Wednesday morning. But what we do know is recorded in these few verses. They could have done these things all afternoon and night. The next recorded event as they “put his own clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him.”
