294 - The Last Supper Through The Resurrection of Jesus Christ

Session Seven - The Crucifixion Day

My name is Steve Jaynes and I read Bible stories while pointing out keys and principles on how to accurately understand the Bible when we read. I started a Bible reading that is a big one. We are going to read every record in chronological order from all four Gospels of every event from The Last Supper through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

This will be a big project. There are more scriptures about this particular period of time than any other time in the Bible. It's going to take time to go through each of these events starting at the Last Supper all the way through to the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

It's going to take several sessions to get through the entire reading. But I think it's one worthy of pursuing.

To help you along we've made a syllabus making it easier for you to follow along with the readings if you'd like. I have put in the syllabus all the scriptures in chronological order so that you can follow along easily if you wanted to. I will be reading from one gospel to another one in each event one at a time. The Syllabus will be in the Show Notes with the Podcast.

Session Six: The Crucifixion Day

This is now Wednesday morning of the fourteenth of Nisan.

Matthew 27:27-31 “Then the soldiers of the governor [Pilate] took Jesus into the common hall [of the governor‘s palace], and gathered unto him the whole band [cohort] of soldiers. 28And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet [crimson or deep scarlet] robe [a wide, coarse military cloak]. 29And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews! 30And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote [to beat repeatedly with a stick] him on the head. 31And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.”

Mark 15:16-20 “And the soldiers led him away into the hall, called Praetorium; and they call together the whole band. 17And they clothed him with purple [a purple garment], and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head, 18And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews! 19And they smote [to beat repeatedly with a stick] him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him. 20And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes [outer garments] on him, and led him out to crucify him.”

Matthew 27:31,32 “And after that they [the soldiers] had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment [outer garments] on him, and led him away to crucify him. 32And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear [to raise, to carry] his cross.”

Mark 15:20,21 “And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes [outer garments] on him, and led him out to crucify him. 21And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear [to raise, to carry] his cross.”

Luke 23:26 “And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear [sustain, support] it after [behind] Jesus.”

John 19:16,17 “Then delivered he [Pilate] him [Jesus] therefore unto them [soldiers] to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away. 17And he [Jesus] bearing [to lift or carry] his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:”

Isaiah 53:4-6 “Surely he hath borne our griefs [sicknesses] , and carried our sorrows [pains] : yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. 6All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.”

Jesus Christ bore our sicknesses and our pain.

Colossians 2:14 “Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;”

2 Corinthians 5:21 “For he [God] hath made him [Jesus] to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”

Matthew 8:16,17 “When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: 17That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare [to lift or carry] our sicknesses.”

Luke 23:27-32 “And there followed [were following] him [Jesus] a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him. 28But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children. 29For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck. 30Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us. 31For if they do these things in a green tree [i.e., with God‘s Son present to bless them], what shall be done in the dry [when their Messiah is no longer around]? 32And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death.”

Mark 15:22,23 “And they [soldiers] bring him unto the place Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, The place of a skull. 23And they gave [were giving] him to drink wine mingled with myrrh: but he received it not.”

This is the first drink offered.

Matthew 27:33,34 “And when they were come [having come] unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull, 34They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.”

Matthew 27:35 “And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.”

Mark 15:24,25 “And when they had crucified him, they parted his garments, casting lots upon them, what every man should take. 25And it was the third hour [9 AM], and they crucified him.”

Luke 23:33 “And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. 34Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.”

John 19:23,24 “Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. 24They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.”

Luke 23:35-37 “And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God. 36And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar [a cheap, sour wine], 37And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews [Judeans], save thyself.”

Matthew 27:36 “And sitting down they watched him there;”

Matthew 27:37 “And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS [JUDEANS].”

Mark 15:26 “And the superscription of his accusation was written over, THE KING OF THE JEWS [JUDEANS].”

Luke 23:38 “And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS [JUDEANS]”

John 19:19-22 “And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS [JUDEANS]. 20This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin. 21Then said the chief priests of the Jews [Judeans] to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews [Judeans]; but that he said, I am King of the Jews. 22Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.”

The most likely reading of the superscription was: THIS IS JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JUDEANS.

Luke 23:39-42 “And one of the malefactors [evildoer] which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. 40But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? 41And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. 42And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.”

Luke 23:43 “And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.”

Paradise is paradise, and heaven is heaven. God’s Word means what it says and says what it means. A paradise is always a place on earth. Take the commas out: “Verily I say unto thee today shalt thou be with me in paradise.”

Matthew 27:38 “Then [not before then] were there two thieves [two robbers] crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another [the word 'another' is 'one'] on the left.”

Mark 15:27,28 “And with him they crucify two thieves [two robbers]; the one on his right hand, and the other ['the other' is 'one'] on his left. 28And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors.”

Matthew 27:39-44 “And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, 40And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross. 41Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, 42He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. 43He trusted in God; let him [God] deliver him now, if he [God] will have him: for he [Jesus] said, I am the Son of God. 44The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth [notice that both robbers reviled Jesus].”

Mark 15:29-32 “And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, and saying, Ah, thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, 30Save thyself, and come down from the cross. 31Likewise also the chief priests mocking said among themselves with the scribes, He saved others; himself he cannot save. 32Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe. And they [“they” refers to the “robbers” of verse 27] that were crucified with him reviled him.”

John 19:18 “Where [at Golgotha] they crucified him [Jesus], and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.”

The word 'one' is not in "Greek". Looking at an Interlinear. Look at the word 'midst'. You cannot be in the midst of two, it has to be four, six, or eight.

Matthew 27:45 “Now from the sixth hour [noon] there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour [about our three in the afternoon].”

Mark 15:33 “And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.”

Luke 23:44 “And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. 45And the sun was darkened…”

Matthew 27:46 “And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”

Mark 15:34 “And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”

My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” does not fit with many clear verses. Consider the following six verses.

John 16:32 “Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.”

Matthew 26:53 “Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions [twelve legions equals 72,000] of angels?”

Romans 11:4 “But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved [shbq] to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal.”

1Kings 19:18 “Yet I have left [Hebrew: shaar] me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.”

2Kings 10:11 “So Jehu slew all that remained of the house of Ahab in Jezreel, and all his great men, and his kinsfolks, and his priests, until he left him none remaining [shbq].”

Deuteronomy 3:3 “So the LORD our God delivered into our hands Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people: and we smote him until none was left to him remaining [shbq].”

My God, My God, for this purpose I was spared, or for this purpose was I reserved.

Matthew 27:47 “Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias.”

Mark 15:35 “And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calleth Elias.”

Matthew 27:48,49 “And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar [cheap, sour wine in both Greek and Aramaic], and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink. 49The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias [Elijah] will come to save him.”

Mark 15:36 “And one ran and filled a spunge full of vinegar [cheap, sour wine], and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying [they said], Let alone; let us see whether Elias will come to take him down.”

This was the fourth drink offered.

John 19:25-27 “Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. 26When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! 27Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home [home is incorrectly supplied].”

John 19:28-30 “After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that [so that] the scripture might be [was] fulfilled, saith, I thirst. 29Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar [cheap, sour wine]: and they filled a sponge with vinegar [cheap, sour wine], and put it [the wine] upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. 30When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar [cheap, sour wine]…”

Matthew 27:50 “Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice…”

Mark 15:37 “And Jesus cried with a loud voice…”

Luke 23:46 “And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice…”

John 19:30 “…he said, It is finished…”

John 17:4 “I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.”

Luke 23:46 “And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend [give] my spirit…”

With these words, Jesus Christ gave His spirit back to God and entrusted all to Him.

Luke 23:46 “…and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.”

Matthew 27:50 “…yielded up the ghost.”

Mark 15:37 “…and gave up the ghost.”

John 19:30 “…and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.”

Matthew 27:51 “And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;”

Mark 15:38 “And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.”

Luke 23:45 “…and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.”

Matthew 27:54 “Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.”

Mark 15:39 “And when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God.”

Luke 23:47,48 “Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man. 48And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned.”

Matthew 27:55,56 “And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him: 56Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's children.”

Mark 15:40,41 “There were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome; 41(Who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered unto him;) and many other women which came up with him unto Jerusalem.”

Luke 23:49 “And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.”

John 19:31 “The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.”

John 19:32,33 “Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him. 33But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:”

John 19:34 “But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.”

John 19:35-37 “And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe. 36For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken. 37And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.”

Matthew 27:57 “When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple:”

Matthew 27:58 “He [Joseph of Arimathea] went to Pilate, and begged [requested] the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.”

Matthew 27:59 “And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it [the body] in a clean linen cloth,”

Matthew 27:60 “And [Joseph of Arimathea] laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out [which was hewn] in the rock: and he [they] rolled a great stone to [upon] the door [the opening] of the sepulchre, and [they] departed.”

Matthew 27:61 “And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.”

Mark 15:42-47 “And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day [omit “the day”] before the sabbath, 43Joseph of Arimathaea, an honourable counsellor, which also waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved [asked for] the body of Jesus. 44And Pilate marveled [questioned with surprise] if he [Jesus] were already dead: and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead. 45And when he [Pilate] knew it [that Jesus was dead] of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph. 46And he [Joseph] bought [having bought] fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone unto [upon] the door of the sepulchre. 47And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses beheld where he was laid.”

Luke 23:50-56 “And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counsellor; and he was a good man, and a just: 51(The same had not consented to [had not agreed to] the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God. 52This man went unto Pilate, and begged [asked for] the body of Jesus. 53And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid. 54And that day was the preparation [And it was a day of preparation], and the sabbath drew on. 55And the women also, which came with him [Jesus] from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how [the manner in which] his body was laid. 56And they [the women] returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.”

John 19:38 “And after this [after the soldiers found Jesus dead and pierced his side but did not break his legs] Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.”

John 19:39 “And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.”

John 19:40 “Then took they [Nicodemus and his servants] the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the jews is to bury.”

John 19:41 “Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.”

John 19:42 “There laid they Jesus therefore [after Nicodemus had properly anointed the body and wrapped for religious burial] because of the Jews’ preparation day [omit this italicized word]; for the sepulcher was nigh at hand.”

All that Jesus Christ did and accomplished, He did for us. And throughout the Word, I see the sin problem is over. I thank God for His wonderful Son.

Romans 5:5-11 “And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. 6For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. 8But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. 10For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. 11And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.”

1John 4:9,10 “In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. 10Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.”
